Cub Scout Campout

Sean and I had the pleasure of joining Cub Scout Pack 274 at the annual fall campout at Mt. Madonna County Park on Saturday and Sunday. It was our biggest campout ever with 170 people (the scouts could bring their whole family to this event). We had some families arrive on Friday, but we couldn't go until Saturday afternoon because of our volleyball match.

We arrived around 2pm on Saturday to find the camping area about half full with our group. We were in the Manzanita group area. It was fairly primitive for our camping style - portable tiolets, a single water spigot for all 170 people and a single fire pit. Sean and I set up our campsite at the farthest end of the camping area to avoid the typical noise and crush on Sunday morning as families pull up stakes. Anyway, our tent is easier to put up and we were soon helping set up the picnic area for our dinner party and Pack meeting. At 4PM, Sean and I hosted a whittling and soap carving class for our Den. It was well attended and seemingly well received.

Dinner was a bbq and it went off well considering the huge crowd that gathered at 6PM. Dinner was followed by dessert and then the Pack meeting. The Dens each did a skit and it was a lot of fun. After the skits, about 75 folks went on a night hike. Bob Easton led the hike and gave us information about the night forest on several stops.

It was very "cool" at night - I got up at 3AM to add more layers. I'll bet it was down in the low 40's...

Sunday morning came early for us and we enjoyed a continental breakfast around the fire ring (lovingly restoked by some ambitious kids). We then went on a hike to see the herd of 40 Fallow Deer on the Mt Madonna grounds.

Sean and I broke camp and left around 11AM and then went fishing at Uvas Reservoir. We didn't catch anything, but we had fun.

We went on a 6mile mtn bike ride and then hit the hot tub... Phew... Steve
